deepenings: registration & payment

REGISTER FOR ALL FOUR--AND SAVE!

Join us for four weekends from July 2025 to July 2026 as we explore and deepen our understanding of the four foundational senses as they relate to ease of learning, daily functioning and social awareness for contemporary students of all ages. Development of the senses of touch, life, self-movement, balance–of the physical body–lay the foundation for our social senses of hearing, word/language/speech, thought/concept and ego of the other person.

  • TOUCH July 26-27, 2025
  • LIFE December 27-28, 2025
  • SELF-MOVEMENT March 28-29, 2026
  • BALANCE July 25-26, 2026

$150 per session per participant or $400 for all four sessions. Register with a friend for the four-session series by July 1, 2025 for 2-for-1 pricing.

OR REGISTER FOR EACH SEPARATELY

After an introduction to Rudolf Steiner’s image of the 12 senses, our journey through the four body senses begins with the sense of TOUCH. What is the impact of this sense on daily functioning at home and in school? Supporting development at this level relates to learning, behavior and social interaction. Content will include:

  • Our sense of TOUCH in relation to other senses and its foundation for the social sense of ego of the other
  • Sense receptors in the skin layers and their relation to tactile integration as a foundation for an awareness of boundaries
  • Common daily observations and their interpretations–‘reading’ student behavior as they navigate the world, strive to manage learning tasks, and engage socially with others
  • Exploration of soul qualities related to this sense
  • Practical activities for home and classroom to support the integration of the sense of touch

This organic sense relates us to our inner constitution: breathing, circulation and digestion. Its functioning gives an experience of well- or ill-being that manifests in a variety of ways. Content will include:

  • The autonomic nervous system, including the Vagus nerve
  • Nerve receptors in the internal organs of breathing, circulation, digestion
  • Connection to the social sense of thought/concept
  • Common observations when the life sense needs support manifesting in behavior, learning challenges, overall health and well-being
  • Exploration of soul qualities related to the life sense
  • Practical suggestions and activities for home and classroom in support of further integration of the life sense

This sense is essential for feeling ‘at home’ in one’s body, ready to freely imitate and learn from surrounding adults. This sense conveys an awareness of how much effort is needed for any task we engage in–from getting dressed to kneading dough, sweeping, pushing a wheelbarrow or writing. Content will include:

  • Central nervous system–efferent and afferent nerves
  • Sense organs–proprioceptors–in muscles, tendons, joint tissue
  • Connection to the social sense of speech/language/word
  • Basis for development of body awareness–including ability to gauge effort needed for fine and gross motor tasks
  • Relationship to visual capacities and eye-hand coordination
  • Exploration of soul qualities related to this sense
  • Common classroom and every-day observations of weakly integrated proprioception
  • Practical work for classroom and home to support further integration of this sense

As human beings, we are at our best when content, anchored and balanced. Students are increasingly distracted, unfocused and restless in their bodies, often not experiencing inner quiet and the ability to attend, listen and engage in learning. Content will include:

  • Clarification of ‘static’ and ‘dynamic’ balance and how they manifest
  • Inner ear vestibular sense organs and the central nervous system
  • Connection to hearing and auditory processing
  • Exploration of soul qualities related to this sense
  • Foundation of development for spatial orientation–3D & 2D
  • Daily observations of difficulties with the sense of balance
  • Practical activities to support continued development of static and dynamic balance for the whole class and at home
